Welcome to our recap of the latest insights shared on the “Laundromat News Today” podcast, hosted by Jordan Berry. Whether you’re a prospective laundromat owner or already own one, these essential tips will help you stay informed and optimize your business.

1. Optimize Laundry Temperature for Cost Savings

Tip: Set your washing machines to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).

Practical Application: A recent study from the UK revealed that washing clothes at 30 degrees Celsius can save up to 38% on laundry costs due to reduced utility usage. For laundromat owners, consider adjusting the temperature settings on your machines to this optimal point and educate your customers on the cost-saving benefits. This can not only reduce your operational costs but also appeal to environmentally-conscious customers.

2. Prepare for Market Growth

Tip: Anticipate growth in the commercial washing machine market.

Practical Application: Research predicts the commercial washing machine market will grow to a $5.08 billion industry by 2031. Stay ahead by investing in new, efficient commercial washing machines to meet increasing demand. Evaluate your current equipment and consider upgrades or expansions. Establish relationships with manufacturers to get the best deals and stay informed about technological advancements in the industry.

3. Leverage Third-Party Delivery Services

Tip: Partner with third-party delivery services to enhance customer convenience.

Practical Application: Wash Dry Fold POS partnered with Burke On Demand to offer pickup and delivery services. Integrating similar third-party services can expand your customer base and offer added convenience, driving customer satisfaction and loyalty. Explore local delivery services or specialized apps to simplify logistics and manage your delivery operations seamlessly.

4. Aim for Community Recognition

Tip: Strive for community awards to build credibility.

Practical Application: Yo Wash Laundromat in Bradenton, Florida, won the Best of Florida award for leading laundry services. Enhancing your community involvement and service quality can earn you similar accolades. Host community events, prioritize customer service, and request customer reviews and testimonials to build a strong reputation.

5. Diversify Your Services

Tip: Combine traditional laundromat services with other community needs.

Practical Application: Former basketball star Ben Woodside’s new business combines a laundromat with a pet wash service. Diversifying services can attract different customer segments and increase revenue streams. Identify additional services that can complement your laundromat, such as a coffee shop, dry cleaning, or small retail, and evaluate their feasibility and demand in your area.

6. Prioritize Safety and Maintenance

Tip: Regularly clean lint traps and vents to prevent dryer fires.

Practical Application: A recent dryer fire in Escanaba highlighted the importance of routine maintenance. Establish a regular maintenance schedule, train your staff to clean lint traps and vents, and conduct frequent inspections. Use high-quality machines and follow manufacturer guidelines for upkeep. Promptly address any maintenance issues to ensure safety and prevent costly downtime.

7. Engage in Community Activities

Tip: Host community events to build relationships and aid local outreach.

Practical Application: Dan Campbell from Wash Around the Clock Laundromat in Tallahassee hosted a family literacy event in conjunction with the Laundry Cares Foundation. Engaging in such activities not only benefits the community but also enhances your laundromat’s image. Partner with local organizations to sponsor events, offer free services for charitable causes, or provide space for community gatherings.

8. Foster Community Togetherness

Tip: Organize events that cater to local needs and traditions.

Practical Application: Okotoks Laundromat in Alberta, Canada, hosted a turkey dinner for the community, showing the power of local engagement. Organize similar events — such as holiday dinners, free laundry days, or clothing drives — to foster community togetherness and show appreciation for your customers. Collaborate with other local businesses to pool resources and amplify impact.

By adopting these practical tips, you can enhance your laundromat’s operations, engage more effectively with your community, and position your business for long-term growth. Stay tuned to “Laundromat News Today” for more updates and insights from the world of laundry and laundromats.

Jordan Berry [00:00:02]:
Welcome to Laundromat News. Today, I am your anchor, Jordan Barry. And I’m coming to you today with the latest and greatest of all things laundromat and laundry related news. Let’s start today with the study coming out of the UK. They’ve got increasing utility costs, just like us, and they did a study to try to figure out the precise temperature to save the most money on your utility bills that you should wash your laundry. And, listen, coming on the heels of this week’s podcast episode where we talked a lot about data and statistics, Let’s talk about the precise temperature you should be washing your laundry at or your customers maybe, or maybe just something to kinda consider. And what the study found is that the precise temperature that is the most efficient to wash your laundry is 30 degrees Celsius, and, yes, I did do the hard work for you of converting that by googling it, and that is 86 degrees Fahrenheit. So that apparently is a precise temperature that could help you save up to 38% on your laundry costs.

Jordan Berry [00:01:14]:
So is that gonna convert to a 38% savings in our industry? Maybe, maybe not. However, it may help us figure out some pricing, for our warm and hot water washes. Food for thought. Okay. Let’s move it over to, some research that predicts that by 20 30 1, commercial the commercial washing machine market is set to grow to be a $5,080,000,000 industry, the commercial washing machine market. So as we talk about the news that’s going on and, especially with all our different manufacturers, just keep in mind, this market is growing, maybe because there’s more larger laundromats coming in, maybe because sheen prices have jumped a bazillion percent. And, there’s just more demand there. So $5,800,000,000 business in commercial washing machines.

Jordan Berry [00:02:17]:
That’s, that’s a big business, but it’s also a good sign for our industry that things are going well. Congratulations to Wash Drifold POS that partnered with Burke on Demand, for on demand delivery, being able to do pickup and delivery with a third party driver there. So big shout out to, to Wash Trifold POS, who’s been, in the business for a while, trying to serve laundromat owners, helping them do drop off laundry. Let’s go over to what’s this one? Oh, yeah. Listen. We’ve got a we’ve we’ve got a we’ve got to give a good shout out to Yo Wash Laundromat that received the best, best of Florida award for leading laundry services in 2024. So congrats to Yo Wash Laundromat, you know, making it happen over there, serving the community well, and being recognized for it. Way to go.

Jordan Berry [00:03:15]:
That’s in Bradenton, Florida. Listen, we’ve got some minor, local celebrities. Former NDSU basketball star Ben Woodside is getting into the business, and he, is open to laundromat slash pet wash business. And, just from the pictures I’m seeing, it looks like a really, really sharp laundermatt. So congrats there, and, you know, keep it going, man. Way to go from sports to to business and, serving local community. Dryer fire in Escanaba, laundromat. Just a reminder, first of all, condolences to the owner.

Jordan Berry [00:03:57]:
Hopefully, the damage wasn’t too, too extensive, and nobody got hurt. But just a reminder, you know, keep those lint traps clean. Keep your vents clean, making sure that we are, you know, doing our part to keep those dryer fires down. They do happen. And, let’s let’s do everything that’s within our control to make sure they don’t happen, anymore. Let’s jump back to Florida and go to Tallahassee. There was a literacy event, for families in the community, and shout out to Dan Campbell, who who owns Wash Around the Clock Laundromat and hosted this literacy event in conjunction with, with the CLA. What’s the, Laundry Cares? Thank you.

Jordan Berry [00:04:45]:
Gosh. Drawing a blank here. Laundry Cares Foundation, doing a free literacy event, in his Laundry Cares Foundation, doing a free literacy event, in his Laundry Cares. I said it before. I’ll say it again. Laundry Cares. Have a great opportunity to make a big impact in our community. So way to go, Dan.

Jordan Berry [00:05:02]:
Keep up the good work. And finally, let’s round it out. We gotta go to our our friends in the great white north, Canada, in Alberta, and we’re gonna go to Okatoks Laundromat, who, on 13th October hosted a turkey dinner for the community. So speaking of doing great things for the community, you know, it’s happening here. It’s happening in Canada. It’s happening all over the place. Laundromats making a huge difference. And for me, selfishly, I want to try to have a tiny, minuscule little part of helping you to help your communities.

Jordan Berry [00:05:45]:
So congratulations out there, to Cynthia Fedorovich at better than home coin laundry, which also I love that name, by the way. So way to go, Cynthia. And, good job doing that turkey dinner and partnering with other businesses in the community. So doing good in our laundromats for our communities. I love it. Lots of stuff going on. We’ll be back next week with the news in the laundromat business. We’ll see you there.
